Oh So Green Smoothie

Light green, dark green, leafy green, powder green, this smoothie is packed with greens.  And not only that, it is so icy, sweet and full of antioxidants.  Blueberries, bananas, healthy, and filling –  what more could you possibly want in a smoothie?

Spirulina is a blue algae.  That seems to be one of the only facts that people agree on when it comes to this food.  Like most super foods (actually, scratch that, every food), there are articles that take on both positive and negative views on the food.  I’ve tried to compile some of the information I’ve read, but really haven’t come to a conclusive decision on this super food yet.

In any case, it makes a delicious addition to a smoothie, and isn’t the colour beautiful?  You can taste the “seaweed” just enough, but it isn’t overpowering with the fruits and other ingredients in this recipe.

– Great source of chlorophyll
– Easily digestible
– Quite high in protein, but for the usual daily amount it’s probably not that high
– High in antioxidants
– High in iron
– Reduces inflammation, cholesterol, and blood pressure
A good source of minerals, vitamins, and essential amino acids

From what I can tell, people are up in arms with spirulina being called a super food because it won’t single-handedly save your life.  It’s probably best not to eat it every single day for the rest of your days, and there’s the potential that it could cause problems for some people.  So, as I love to say when it comes to food: moderation is key.  One thing to remember with spirulina is that it is very potent, and might surprise your body if it’s not used to this type of food.  Take it a tsp at a time!IMG_5101

Now that that’s all settled, let’s get to the recipe!
