Oven-Baked Yam Chips

I love sweet potato and yam chips, but the one you get from grocery stores are often covered in not-so-healthy oils and oftentimes sugar! Since yams are so sweet on their own, I really don’t feel they need extra sugar. This recipe is super simple, and the only real trick is slicing the potatoes thin enough. I found the sharpest knife in my house and managed to find a technique that worked for me. You want to avoid having uneven thickness on the chips, simply because one side will always be soft if it’s too thick! My family polished these off in a night, and they have been made many times since.IMG_6223

  1. 2-4 medium sized yams
  2. 2-3 tbsp olive oil
  3. paprika
  4. garlic powder
  5. salt
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Slice the yams as thinly as possible. I use a sharp knife and use the tip like a pivot point, with my right hand holding the knife handle and my left laying flat on the knife to guide it down in a straight line. The thinner and even your slices, the easier it will be to judge cooking time and make sure all your chips are even.
  3. In a large bowl, toss yams with oil and spices until covered. I use about a teaspoon for each spice and they are lightly flavoured, so it's good to fool around with the quantities until you find one you like.
  4. Spread the potato slices out one slice thick on baking trays. Bake for 20 minutes, checking periodically to make sure your yams aren't burning.
  5. After 20 minutes, flip the yam chips and bake until they are slightly brown and starting to harden, probably another 10-20 minutes. Depending on your oven, some of them might brown more quickly than others.
  6. Remove the chips from the oven and set on the counter to crisp. They'll probably still be soft from the oven, so the airing time is when they start to get crispy. If in about 10 minutes you find the majority are still soft, bake them for another 10 minutes.
  7. Enjoy with dip or just on their own - they're addictive!
  1. *spice combinations are endless with these chips - experiment and see what you like!
